In this chapter we have attempted to outline the
methods of training, conscious and unconscious, which
we utilize in the pursuit of our goal in life. In sub¬
sequent chapters we shall show in greater detail how
the unconscious philosophy of optimistic altruism may
be attained by a conscious strategy of approach to the
three great human problems—work, society, and sex.
Progress toward the good life is a matter of conscious
training involving the extension of all human horizons,
and the assumption of complete personal responsibility
for defeat and success. The quality of happiness must of
necessity follow as a consequence of such active participa¬
tion in the art of being human. And, as we stated in our
very first chapter, it is not necessary to attain the finality
of the good life to be happy. One must make only the
first step, invest only a small initial capital of courage and
good will. Once the investment is made, happiness
accrues by compound interest.
