"sa]S the now invisible spirits of Athothis and Paulus ™ Androcydes moved through the air, the latter noticed occasional gleams of light in the win- dows below. " Some of our citizens appear to be early risers," re- marked the physician; " and yet it can not be more than four o'clock." " These lights often indicate the presence of sickness," replied Athothis. " Here is an unusually bright ray al- most at our feet. Let us enter ! " And as he spoke they were wafted over an open transom, borne as lightly as thistle-down on a summer zephyr. The apartment betokened the presence of persons of luxurious habits and great wealth. The floor was cov- ered with heavy Turkish rugs ; the walls hung with satin drapery; the ceiling frescoed in the highest style of art. Delicate lace curtains, as fine as though woven by spiders, drooped from the windows, partially hidden by golden- threaded lambrequins of gorgeous design. The furniture was made of the most expensive hard woods, richly in- laid in arabesque patterns; while the numerous orna- ments and pieces of bric-a-brac were all in keeping with the artistic taste of the owner
