ISE, my human benefactor ! " said the Egyptian
in a clear ringing voice. " Rise and receive
any reward you may demand from Athothis,
son of Mena." Then the doctor raised his
eyes and saw standing over him a form of princely mien,
clad in the splendid robes of a magician to the earliest
dynasties. This personage extended his hands and lifted
the trembling mortal from the floor. " Strange phan-
tom ! " gasped Paulus Androcydes, " what art thou?"
and the apparition replied, " I am he who but a few
moments since resided in your cat Anubis. Oh ! mortal,
you were a very kind master, and nowhere, during my
innumerable transmigrations, have I met better treatment
than under your hospitable roof. This is saying much,
since I have been a wanderer on the earth for the past
sixty-three hundred years. Little did I dream when
coming to you as a mere kitten that immortality would
so soon be my portion. I had fully expected to trans-
migrate for at least a million of centuries to come.
Imagine my surprise when I first discovered that you
were reading the papyrus and uttering my name aloud;
fancy my horror when you uncovered the remains of my
