however, many such exercises are most valuable as affording
a training to the whole abdominal wall. The first of this
series to be attempted are those executed in the upright
attitude, i.e., standing or walking. The sedentary and
recumbent exercises should be attempted somewhat later—
say from the beginning of the fourth week, after delivery.
Of course, they all gain greatly in efficacy if the patient
already knows how they should be performed. And, in that
happy case, fatigue is less and they can be attempted sooner.
As a rule, the abdominal exercises involving the " Hands
and Knees" or quadrupedal posture, should be ruled
out for nursing mothers. And the " Extension-Flexion '
exercise should not be attempted in the six weeks following
childbirth.
