TRADE REPORT.
Gold keeps flowing into the Bank ; and as the continental demand continues to decrease,
money is plentiful.
The rate of discount for good short hills is 2^ per cent.
Notwithstanding the easy state of money matters, the markets for colonial and other produce
are flat, with a downward tendency. We abstain from comment on this subject, as the
statistics and prices current which follow, and are contrasted with the same period last year,
correctly represent the present state and prospects of the articles in which our readers are
interested.
In sundries, trade may be pronounced healthy, most houses being full of orders. Glass
bottles are somewhat higher, but are not expected to remain so long. Turnery goods are
very scarce, the demand being greatly beyond the average. Vegetable ivory, which a few
months back was scarcely procurable, is now lower. Flax and cotton are high ; if the former
maintains its present rates, it will necessitate an advance in linen lint. Hemp is rather lower,
but not sufficient to affect the price of small twine. The dye for pink is lower, but has not yet
produced any effect on pink twine or cotton avooIs. In this department the Americans have
been much larger buyers than usual this year, most of the houses last year (in consequence of
the unsettled state of affairs) having bought much more sparingly than the demand justified.
We trust our Price Current will be very useful and acceptable to the great body of our sub-
scribers. We fear it will not be very amiably received by our wholesale friends, as "it lets
the cat out of the bag" too much. We, however, found ourselves obliged to decide on
one of three courses—either to give no price current, and so stultify a most important item of
our Journal; to insert the list of some first-class house, which would have offended every
other firm, and given our subscribers only a one-sided report; or the plan we have pursued of
giving what are known as the Mincing Lane quotations.
It will be necessary for our retail subscribers to bear in mind that they cannot, as a rule,
purchase at the prices quoted, inasmuch as these arc the cash prices in bulk. They will, how-
ever, be able to form a tolerably correct idea of what they ought to pay.
